I naturally tends to spend too much time on them, polishing corner after corner of my artworks. But over the time I found a way out of necessity and guessing; a couple of rules that allows me to details only 30% while painting almost flat the other part. This video tries to put words on this technique and show how I use it. I had the idea of this video after browsing old artworks, that's why I wanted to make also a "15 years ago" moment in the video and show you how it changed. I hope you learned something and you'll like this very short format, not about Krita for once, but about a painting tip.

I made this artwork for myself, a single day personal project to train with my new XP-Pen Pro Artist 24 pen display. The tablet was sponsored; this video is not. XP-Pen sent me Promo codes and I mention it in the beginning of the video so my audience can benefit of the reduction. That's all. So, after a week, what do I feel about the tablet? This tablet reminds me a lot the Cintiq 21UX: the smooth surface, the parallax the compact frame; but it is way better than the 21UX thanks to the QuadHD monitor, the colors, the stylus. The Digimend driver hack works fine for me. I'll still prefer my large Intuos4XL because I prefer non-display tablets for the ergonomy; but I'll keep the XP-Pro 24 next to me as my second monitor; so when I need to sketch, I don't plug the Cintiq13HD anymore but I just swing the 24Pro on a Ergotron arm I connected to it. Good setup, the "detailing step" was a pleasure to do on this device.

Sorry if I sound a little messy and inarticulate; I recorded it last week and today while I was doing the long task of transcripting the subtitles, I saw my sentences were particulary segmented and hesitants. I hope the subtitles will help.

I hope this video will help all the one who decide to go on a big project with colorize-mask. It's always different to use a tool on a single artwork; than ising a tool on 60 panels/10 pages. The little tips here might appears as just be small improvements; something to just win 10 minutes maximum and get a bit more of comfort; But for comic artist; 10 minutes less on each panels means often many hours saved on a full story. (60 panels x 10 minutes = 600 minutes; 10 hours!... ). So any small tips are precious! Any bottleneck in the workflow are also severe... I hope this set will help the one facing the same challenges to get easier time.

During the process, I thought about activating the recorder and I even put a webcam so you can see what I'm doing on the tablet too. I'm not doing it for everypages; because you can imagine the weight on disk about saving around 10h of videos like this; and also how it is not multi-tasking: when I record, you don't see me open the door to get the mail of the postman, you don't see me cleaning temporary accident of a cat bringing back a mouse at home, you don't see me typing to solve a merge request issue to merge a translation of Pepper&Carrot.

It was recorded with OBS on Kubuntu 20.04 and edited with Kdenlive 20.12. The tablet I use here are both the Cintiq13HD and Intuos4XL; it depends my mood (I'm not sponsored), but I prefer the Intuos4XL if I had to choose. For inking and sketching, the tiny Cintiq is nice.

It helps at managing the overall aspect of the picture. To finish only a small part of the artwork was detailed: the characters. This way, the depth of field is not managed by a blur added (for eg. reducing the detailes of a colored line-art) , but by the lack of details all around. It's a technique that works fine with staged characters, little silhouette and background with organic shapes. It totally falls appart as soon as I apply that to a reaction shot for a comic, or on a complex perspective that require precise guideline. But I'll keep practising because I really like the feeling of 'freedom' this technique offers.

It's an old speedpainting I made in September 2020. I transformed the video records I had on my disk today into a 3 min video timelapse because this week I have no time to record and edit a full tutorial. I'm working hard to finish episode 34 before the end of the month! I hope you'll like this little 'filler' 😉

I also do that because I'm tired about the numbered videos "Intuos VS Cintiq" as if you had to choose one clan over the other... Both have pros and cons and with a sane operating system (like my Kubuntu Linux 20.04) you can unplug one on the fly and use the other without too much magnetic noises and a get plug'n'play experience. It really helps, I don't even need to restart Krita. For more information about my tablets, read this blog post where I detail all the one I owned over the last 20 years: https://www.davidrevoy.com/article332/tablet-history-log

The artwork here is a commissioned artwork for Framasoft (www.framasoft.org) and more precisely for CHATONS (https://chatons.org): a collectivity of neutral and ethical host of decentralised services (the acronym in french CHATONS mean kittens). That's why the theme of this illustration is cats doing engineering on the top of a cloud. Sorry I had to shorten it in the video to "cat and cloud" or the intro would be very long and it wasn't the topic of the video anyway... Maybe for a later video!

I recorded the process.

I really hope this production report will give you a "backstage feeling" in my making of Pepper&Carrot episode 34. I'm sharing my sketches, storyboard and visual (without spoiling the next episode). This is the first time I'm writing a making-of article as a full video by the way. I try to adapt with the modern time to produce contents on Internet (and accept detailed articles published on blogs are probably not something read by newer generations). I'm not comfortable that much with the media with my heavy French accent and English mistakes, with the tone of work required by video-editing and then uploading; but I really think it's the best media to communicate a complex message and concepts with ease for the audience.

Honnestly, the artwork could have been done twice faster; but I made 'small' mistakes on the first steps of the making-of (maybe I wanted to go too fast?). Main mistakes: no consistent light direction on foreground and background + wanting to hide the special effect to the end for the tree decoration and finding midway the result is not in my taste anymore. Lessons I learnt on this one: block the keylight more seriously on the underpainting (a layer I tend to be very distracted by all the yummy colors and ambiant possibilities). All of that made me paint-over 3 or 4 times area... But the end illustration is fine, so I thought it was interesting to share the process and annotate to show the mistakes. I hope you'll like this!

Sorry about that but you missed nothing: mostly audio/video test and my own introduction and special thanks to the organisor and patrons)

This video was recorded during the workshop I made for the Libre Graphic Meeting 2020 on the 29 May 2020 at 15h00 Paris Time, LGM was this year an online event due to the world pandemic ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libre_Graphics_Meeting ).

During this one hour livestream, I'm painting with a speedpaint method an artworks using shapes, sculpting them with light and no underneath drawing or composition thumbnails. A quick method ideal to design quick iterations and paint quick tiny illustrations. But it has a big downside: the shape are rarelly well rendered and I wouldn't use that for scene with complex perspective or complex anatomy. For a one hour painting with Krita commented in live, I'm happy.

The video was broadcasted using only free/libre and open-source software; using a Jitsi server (a sort of Skype alternative), and I had to workaround to get a video in the corner; I couldn't use OBS. The chat system is IRC on Freenode. It was recorded with SimpleScreenRecorder on Kubuntu Linux 19.10 and I use Krita 4.3beta in the demo with default brushes.
